Beef facility with cattle walking through a chute and a person guiding them

Beef Facility

Training the next generation of cattle handlers and improving management practices with collaboration and Extension programming for more effective beef production.

¿ì²¥µ¼º½â€™s beef cattle handling facility is one of a kind in Ohio, featuring a corral, sorting pens and a dual chute system with a hydraulic squeeze chute and breeding box — everything students need to work cattle safely and effectively. Designed by renowned animal behaviorist , the facility helps students understand how facility design, animal behavior and stockmanship work together. Curved chutes and a round crowd pen support natural cattle movement, helping reduce stress while improving safety for both animals and handlers.

The herd includes crossbred and registered Angus cattle as well as nationally recognized Murray Grey cattle. Students work with brood cows, replacement heifers and bulls throughout the year.

  • 50 finished cattle marketed each year
  • 200 acres of pasture
  • 120 fall-calving cows
  • 30 spring-calving cows

Real skills for real careers

Students don’t just study beef production — they practice it from day one. Working with the herd throughout the year helps students understand the full production cycle and prepares them for careers in livestock production, veterinary medicine, animal health, Extension, research and allied agricultural industries.

Hands-on experiences may include:

  • Daily herd care
  • Feeding and feedlot management
  • Calving support
  • Branding
  • Artificial insemination
  • Hoof trimming
  • Vaccinating
  • Dehorning
  • Sorting and handling cattle
