Understanding your student's academic privacy
As your student begins their college journey, it’s natural to want to stay involved and informed. We encourage families to talk openly with their student about classes, internships, involvement opportunities, and future goals. These conversations can make a tremendous difference in their success and well-being.
However, once a student begins attending Ohio State — regardless of who pays the tuition — their education records are protected by federal law. Under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), the university cannot share information such as grades, schedules, or academic progress with parents or guardians unless the student has provided written consent.
